Would you like to volunteer at Small World? We need women who are fluent in English and are interested in teaching women from other countries and cultures. Teaching experience is helpful, but not required. Likewise, ability to communicate in another language can be helpful. Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to get to know our international students.
Times needed: We ask women to commit to volunteering Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:00-2:30 pm for a complete semester (Fall or Spring). Volunteer roles include:
– Lead/Assistant Classroom Teacher
A degree in education, ESL or related field is helpful. Teaching or tutoring experience is an advantage, but not necessary.
– Classroom Assistant or Substitute
Interested women may assist in the classroom as needed. College students majoring in education, teaching ESL or related fields are welcome.
– Library Assistant
We need someone to assist our librarian with processing new books, shelving books and helping students choose appropriate books for their English ability level.
– Front Desk Assistant
This role includes welcoming new students, answering questions about Small World, making name tags, helping new students find their way around the building, etc. Knowledge of a second language such as Spanish or Chinese would be helpful in this role.
– Evening Social or Special Event Organizers
Small World would like to resume hosting evening socials in private homes during May through October. Socials are a relaxing evening of conversation and refreshments in an American home, for women only. Classes are not held during the summer, so these gatherings give students and teachers a chance to stay in touch. Other events outside the classroom, such as guided tours, are also welcome. (This role does not necessarily require availability on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.)
– Behind the Scenes Assistants
If you are not available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, you may still be able to help us out.
- We could use your help advertising the program by distributing flyers and brochures, creating social media posts, or sharing information about our program at your church or your kids’ school.
- We could use people who speak languages other than English to communicate with potential students by phone and email.
- We also welcome volunteers who may not want to coordinate the evening socials, but would like to open their homes to host an evening social.
